I usually don't cook from mixes, mainly because of the random preservatives and chemicals listed on the ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised by the ingredient list on the Velata Classique Crepe Mix; all purpose flour, low-fat milk alternative, butter powder, sugar, & kosher salt. These are what I would put in crepes I was making from scratch (although not in powdered form). With the mix, all my kids had to do was measure out the crepe mix, add hot water and eggs, and whisk until smooth. Daddy helped heat the water but kid one and kid two were able to handle the measuring and whisking on their own.
The instructions for using the crepe maker are simple and short.
- Place crepe maker on heating base and plug into outlet.
- Switch on the appliance (ready light will illuminate). Kid two took care of these first two steps on his own.
- Pour prepared crepe batter into dipping dish. Easy job for kid one.
- When the crepe maker is heated and ready to use, the ready light will turn off. The crepe maker makes a light clicking sound when the light turns on and off, so you don't have to be watching to know when it's ready.
- Lift crepe maker from heating base, turn it upside down, and dip the cooking surface into the batter at a slight angle. Dip the edge, then roll crepe maker to fully coat the surface.
- Turn crepe maker over (right-side up) and return to base. Daddy tried it a couple times first, then helped kids one and two on their first attempts. After that, they were able to handle it on their own. The crepe maker was light enough for kid two (age 6) to manage without a problem.
7. The crepe is done when the ready light turns off after illuminating. Turn the crepe maker upside down over a plate, and use the spatula to loosen the crepe's edge and transfer it to the plate. Repeat with remaining batter. Sometimes the crepe would fall off the maker on its own when it was flipped over the plate, but when it needed a little help, kid four was able to join in with the spatula.
The Velata Crepe Maker picked up the prepared mix from the dipping dish until their was no more to pick up. The kids had made perfect Mother's Day crepes, practically on their own. Daddy prepared some fruit and yogurt while kid two set the table. Kid one helped fill her brothers' crepes and topped them with Velata's all-natural Raspberry Syrup.
Clean up was simple; just wash off the dipping dish and give the crepe maker a quick wipe down with a damp cloth.
I'd say this made-by-kids Mother's Day breakfast was a success, all thanks to the ease of the Velata Crepe Maker. We can't wait to try some more crepe creations this summer.

Disclosure: I was given the Velata Crepe Maker, Classique Crepe Mix, and Velata Raspberry Syrup to try out with my kids. My opinion was unsolicited and completely my own.
